I shot this as part of an ongoing portrait series. The idea is simple: find people who carry their history in their face and let the camera do the rest. No direction. No posing. No retouching. Just the person and the light.

 

She was a market vendor. I don't remember exactly what she was selling. What I remember is how she held that cigarette. Like a pause she had earned.

 

Printed on heavy matte paper so the shadow and grain read exactly as they were. Black or white frame options. Available in five sizes.
